Legends, Myths & Lies ~ April 2024 ~ Why don’t eclipses ever win at hide and seek?

Hey, hey, My Fantastical Readers—

Why don’t eclipses ever win at hide and seek?

Because they always get caught hiding in the shadows! Lol

From my writing sanctuary: Exciting news is on the horizon! This year, I decided to branch out and use my background in Recreational Therapy and love for writing to give back to the community that has supported me. Medina Library has done a great job organizing writing workshops/conferences supporting all writers of varying degrees. So, this year, in June, I’ll be a guest speaker discussing Time Management Strategies for Author Success in Completing a Novel. Also, I’ll be working with another library, helping to head up several teen workshops. Some things we will discuss include Fantasy, Myths, and Magic, world-building, and character-building. I plan to share some world-building ideas and how I came up with The Therans series. I’m pleased to share that I’ll work with WriteHive as a panelist at their 2024 writing conference.

Ultimately, my goal is to inspire fellow authors to write stories that capture their thoughts and put them on paper—or, should I say, put them into the computer. Lol. When I started writing, I used paper—and please don’t ask my age. Now, enough about me. 😊

A few weeks ago, we saw the eclipse. It was such a spectacular sight. There’s so much information surrounding the phenomenon in the newspapers, news, and varying articles. Eclipses have captured the imaginations of cultures worldwide. There are legends, superstitions, and symbolism behind these celestial events that swing from one extreme to another.

Greeks considered the eclipses to be a warning from their gods. They believed their gods were angry and that humans did something displeasing. It’s even been said that Christians believe eclipses are a sign of God’s judgment. The Bible contains many references to the sun and moon; some think the eclipse is a sign of the savior’s imminent return. Ancient Chinese cultures thought of the eclipse as a sign of doom. There is even a Chinese Moon Festival, celebrating moon gazing and indulging in a delicious treat: mooncakes. Interestingly, moon cakes became a symbol during dark times. Secret messages were hidden in the treats, eventually leading to the downfall of the Mongol rule. Another myth is that ancient Chinese believed that solar eclipses occurred when a dragon attacked and devoured the sun.

On a positive note, some Australian cultures viewed them as romantic events, and native Americans also had different perspectives. They saw it as a time of spiritual respect. There have been 15 total eclipse events over the past 150 years, and in the 21st century, only two total solar eclipses have been visible from the United States.

I do not know whether the eclipse is a prophecy or warning, as much as a natural occurrence. I only write fiction and have learned never to debate biblical prophecy. So, let’s leave the imaginative tales throughout history, from the amusing to the downright bizarre. Whether it’s from dragons swallowing the sun to celestial rabbits making mooncakes, these bizarre tales add a humorous twist to legends.

I hope you took the time to appreciate the scientific wonders of the celestial event and the whimsical stories surrounding it. After all, laughter is the best way to eclipse any shadow of doubt.

There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes of writing a book, and I love sharing my writing journey with you. Here’s a glimpse into the hard work of season author Thomas Gondolfi, a contributor to Legends, Myths & Lies Newsletter.

The Tale of the Table

Ever seen an author selling his books at a convention, a book fair, or even a farmer’s market? Whether you are intrigued with his titles, his cover, his manner, or not, the effort to bring him there is far more than you could imagine. Writing the book alone is a daunting process for most, but to get that book in front of you is far beyond even that. I’m here to share with you all of the blood, sweat, and tears of that brave author.

I’ll start with the obvious. The author you see has to have to have the ability and craft to write a book. Let’s take an established author who writes three thousand words per day (roughly seven pages). Assuming a five-day workweek he’ll finish in six to eight weeks. But that’s just the first draft. There will be at least two rewrite passes for another two months. This author has already invested three to four months of his/her full-time effort into the manuscript. And note, this is for someone who already knows what they are doing. For someone new, it is more like an order of magnitude longer—think three years or more.

Going on the assumption that this is an independent author, he/she has to take those words and make them into a physical book. They need cover art, cover design, manuscript editing (because you can’t edit your own work), manuscript typeset, and then get it printed. Again, assume someone is familiar with the process and all of the above steps take circa another month of effort AND close to two thousand dollars in outlay plus about $5 per book.

Wahhooo… the author has a book in hand. Now what? He has to get it in front of you, the public. The old adage of “Build a better mousetrap and they will beat a path to your door” is utter rubbish. One of the primary marketing tools is to go to conventions and interact with the public in person.

Our author has to find a convention and then apply, hoping that they are in time for the cutoff for vendors AND there is space for them. Oh, and did I mention, outlay another say average of $200. Oh, have to have accommodations at the show. Book a hotel room for another maybe $200 per night. And that is just the start. How will they travel to the show?

The writer has to get their books from where they are to the show (in the right quantities) paying shipping at maybe fifty cents per book.

How much will they charge per book? How do they display their works (and how to get them to the show)? How will they draw attention to themselves and their books? What will they say when a customer approaches them?

Again, let’s say this person already has all of this figured out. The convention weekend arrives. In order to set up, they arrive two hours before you are allowed to enter. They leave half an hour after the doors are closed to restock and make the booth pretty again. During this long day, they are stuck in that booth like a songbird in a cage, with about as much ability to do anything. While you are enjoying the panels, the games, the masquerade, they sit there fully on display the entire time—smiling and interacting more than any introvert ever should. Not to mention the boring hours of doing nothing.

Don’t forget the aftermath. Oh, and just because the show is over, doesn’t mean the work is. After the vendor room shuts down on the last day, they must spend another two hours taking everything down. After they return home, there is restocking/storage, recording show data, accounting, girding their loins for the next show, and the dread taxes.

I know I’ve been a long time getting here… so what is my point to all of this?

I’d like you, as the attendee of the convention, to realize three things: 1) It took a lot of effort and money to get that book there, and the $10, $15, $20, or even more is not overpriced. 2) Vendors are often bored sitting there. Even if you aren’t interested in their books, talking to them costs you effectively nothing. You might find you learn something or even make a friend. 3) No writer is going to get rich doing this. Instead, they thrive on the occasional crumb of praise. Tell them what you liked. Give them a review. Buy a book instead of one of those POP! dolls!

Authors give so much and ask for so little. Encourage them.

Legends, Myths & Lies ~ March 2024 ~ What secrets do maps tell ….

Hey, hey, My Fantastical Readers—

Are you curious about my latest world-building project? Recently, I created a story map and hired an artist to complete the final touches to make it ‘look’ like it was on the hide of an animal’s skin.

Maps in a storyline improve the book’s mystery, depth, and authenticity, drawing readers into an entirely fantastical universe. The imagination and work it took to create an unknown world and draw up a land mass is unbelievable. World-building is very involved, from crafting complicated and immersive settings within a story to historical, cultural, and even political aspects. In making a world map, various factors are taken into consideration.

My map is relatively simple in design. However, other authors/creators might have to consider the civilization’s population, food supply, temperature, and traditions, and it will take varying drafts to make the project perfect. Also, the written narrative descriptions must align with the map’s physical environment.

Why does an author create a map? Or even need a map?

Ultimately, the most essential part of crafting a story world is making it come alive for the reader. I love opening a fantasy or science fiction book and finding a map—it’s impressive!

Here’s a sneak peek map section for one of my books. I’ll share more with you in the future.

FACTUAL TALES: Unraveling the mystery behind St. Patrick’s Day isn’t easy. I’ve read many articles, skimmed many paragraphs … (Lol), and learned it is Ireland’s most significant national holiday. The Irish have celebrated the religious holiday for over a thousand years. However, it’s not legally considered a holiday in America, although the thirteen colonies celebrated it in 1737.

Who is St. Patrick? What are the facts, mysteries, and stories behind St. Patrick’s Day?

From my legend sleuthing expertise, Patrick’s real name was Maewyn Succat. However, after being ordained, he took on the name Patrick. There are many Legends, Myths & maybe even some lies in the articles I have read. A popular folklore often shared with St. Patrick is that he banished snakes from Ireland, forcing them to slither into the sea—but the fact is Ireland’s fossil archives reveal zero traces of snakes. Legend, Myth, or Lie, we will never actually know. Truth be told, Irish historians can’t even point to the truth of his burial site.

Stay tuned for more blarney … Lol

To complicate her life further, Rayne, a resident of the community, is determined to win Vela’s attentions. Her Intended bond with Linc doesn’t stop him from trying everything he can to entice her.

Review: DUNE 2 Don’t Bother

Reviewer: Tom Gondolfi

Score: D or 1 star

Overall:

Folks, I’m probably going to take a good deal of heat about this one, but as a huge fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune* I can’t give this movie a pass. There were too many key changes to the story that made it a poor film adaptation. I went into this with such high hopes (even after the marginal Dune 1), only to be dashed on the rocks and my liver eaten out by a giant bird.

NOTE: Spoilers to follow

The Good –There are only a few:

  • Gurney Halleck knowing where the family atomics were fills in a gap that was in the books.
  • Once again, seeing a true thopter that I see when I read the books was exhilarating.
  • I also enjoyed the darkness/stark black and white of planet Harko and thought it was good filmmaking.
  • I also enjoyed the special effect that gave the oily fireworks on Harko (that shows how far I have to reach to find something good).

The Bad – There are so many it’s hard to choose:

  • This movie didn’t even really have the majesty that made Dune 1 almost tolerable.
  • Once again (like Dune 1), the interpersonal relationships are almost totally lacking
  • Feyd Rautha is a psychopath with no real intelligence in the movie where as in the book he was cruel and cunning.
  • Chani leaves Paul when he demands the Princess’s hand to be Emperor.
  • The use of nuclear weapons to destroy the spice instead of the water of life.
  • Effectively zero talk about the ecology of Dune.
  • Chani isn’t recognized the daughter of Liet.
  • The family atomics are missiles… Never talked about in the book.
  • Alia is never born in this book but rather speaks through Jessica.
  • The Bene Gesserit basically made the Emperor move again House Atreides rather than because the Atreides had trained a few warriors better than the Sardukar
  • The “superiority” of the Sardukar were almost never mentioned.
  • The Emperor had used the Harkonnens in the past to do his dirty work.
  • How Paul really became one of the fremen… by being successful in battle.
  • How Stilgar really started as “a creature” of Maudib rather than transitioned there.
  • No mention of Count Fenring at all (his wife, yes, but not him).
  • Spice being like some mineral in the sand rather than the biproduct of the ecology of Dune, the little maker, etcetera.

… and the list goes on and on.

Summation:

I stayed to the end to see if they could pull something out at the twelfth hour, but I checked out of the story they presented long before and probably should have left early.

If you never read the books, you will probably enjoy the movie (if you can follow it). If you loved the book, I would avoid this like the plague.

While a fan of the original book, I didn’t like the remainder of the series.

Legends, Myths & Lies ~ February 2024 ~ Who doesn’t love a dash of spice in life?

Hey, hey, My Fantastical Readers!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Who doesn’t love a dash of spice in life? And I’m not just talking about whipping up dishes in the kitchen, though cooking happens to be one of my favorite pastimes. Haha.

What I mean is authentic, heartfelt romance immortalized within the pages of a captivating novel … think of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, Bella and Edward from Twilight, and from what I’ve gathered about Holly Black’s book Suren, the heroine and Price Oak. Now, that’s an enemy to lovers’ story I am interested in unraveling. A runaway queen. A reluctant prince. And a quest that may destroy them both. Romance, fantasy, and mystery are all tied up in the pages of a highly sought-after book.

Even on television, there are captivating romances to behold … consider timeless tales of love such as Lady and the Tramp or the enchanting story of Cinderella and Prince Charming.

Ultimately, I’m hooked on Pride and Prejudice romance, with a twist of Twilight intrigue matched with an adventurous quest! But I’m all about the character’s journey in a story.

Not surprisingly, romance is the number one bestselling and most profitable fiction genre. But what makes romance sell? Is it the beautiful connection two people share? The secrets that threaten to tear them apart. What sacrifices are characters willing to make for true love? Or is it because of Valentine’s Day?

This is a short laundry list of questions that evoke intrigue and emotional investment, enticing readers to delve into the pages of story romance and discover the answers. But my personal experience says it goes beyond that …

My personal thought is that since COVID-19, romance has sold so well because people didn’t socialize. Since high school, I’ve been an avid reader, but after COVID-19 attacked America, people found comfort and connection with the words written on the pages of stories. In many ways, it was a way to experience moments of angst, adventure, and romance and stay within the safety of your home.

Because I had the time, that’s one reason why I dove headfirst into writing Callie’s life. I became so deeply connected to her story that I couldn’t stop tapping away at my computer. While her relationship with Trystan may not scream enemies-to-lovers, a powerful undercurrent of mystery surrounds their storyline. And when you craft a heartfelt scene that leaves you in awe, it only adds to the intrigue of their connection.

Okay, so I couldn’t let my readers off the hook without sharing information about one of the myths surrounding Valentine’s Day. According to historical records, Valentine’s Day traces back to a priest named Valentine during the Roman Empire. One legend suggests that Emperor Claudius II banned marriage for young men because he believed that single men made better soldiers. But he defied the decree and continued to marry young couples secretly. His actions were discovered, and he was arrested and imprisoned.

According to research, he signed a letter ‘from your Valentine’ to his jailer’s daughter. This was a woman he’d supposedly befriended and healed from blindness before execution.

Last minute thought: Go ahead and read a little on Valentine’s Day, but prioritize spending quality time with your beloved Valentine. 😊

Legends, Myths, & Lies ~ January 2024 ~ Unleash the Paw-sibility … what’s the latest news?

Hey, hey, My fantastical Readers—

“Unleash the Paw-siblitiy … fetch the latest scoop!

Here’s a paw-sitively crazy scoop, but not necessarily a secret: I’m a canine lover! So much so that I’ve written one of my pups into The Therans series. His name is Tesla, and like my story there are different legends around my pup’s name.

First, my dog was named after a scientist, Nikola Tesla—I love science and history.

Initially, I aimed to depict Callie, my main character, as intelligent in the story, which is why she chose to name her puppy Tesla. Additionally, it served as a shared interest for her conversation with Trystan, the hero of the story. Moreover, the captivating and mysterious legends surrounding Tesla infused a sense of intrigue, intensifying the overall storytelling experience.

There’s a famous legend surrounding the eccentric Nikola Tesla. Supposedly, the scientist had an earthquake machine in his Manhattan home. Well, apparently, he nearly brought down the neighborhood during one of his experiments. This earthquake machine was a high-frequency oscillator.

Of course, most things I write about deal with fiction, but could you imagine if this technology existed? Hmmm … this gives me ideas of new things to write. And for all you fact-checkers, I did Google the subject matter. Yep, and leave it to me, I love to twist legends and do this in my stories, too.

Legends, Myths & Lies ~ December 2023 ~ Are legends a blend of fact and fiction?

Hey, hey, My Fantastical Readers—

Ho-Ho- I’m back … like Santa sliding down your chimney with more Legends Myths & Lies!

And speaking of legends, Santa Claus has evolved over centuries. The most significant contribution to the tale is Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas was a 4th-century Christian bishop known for his kindness toward the less fortunate and children. This tale reached widespread popularity with the poem ‘The Night Before Christmas.’ From there, Santa Claus gained influence from advertisements, and over time, the legend has grown into a global phenomenon.

Some say legends are a blend of facts and fiction.

This is where my story comes in … yeah, there may not be truth to the culture of Therans, but what my brainstorming imagination generated. However, Lemuria, Atlantis, and the ancient City of Troy are mythical lost continents or cities with civilizations steeped in mystery and some with people having powers. In all reality, we cannot confirm or deny the existence of these civilizations. For example, Turkish archaeologists have uncovered an ancient coin in northwest Turkey.

It is believed that the figure on the 1,800-year-old coin is Paris; some indicate Paris was blamed for starting the legendary Trojan War. The coin gives value to the myth of Troy.

Now, jump a head … think of the Wakanda from the Marvel Comics. Wakanda is a fictional nation with advanced technology, and it’s hidden from the outside world, not unlike Santa’s workshop. Santa’s got a sleigh with the latest technical advancement and a crew of elves who make toys for all the children, and other than on the television, no one can find its location.

Now, what if the Theran world wasn’t just a ‘legend’ confined to the pages of a book? Would you explore a fictional world like Lemuria or Atlantis to appreciate the author’s storytelling and world-building? Are you curious to delve deeper and uncover more about its existence?

Last minute thought: Hopefully, my books can be found in the UPS of Santa’s sleigh next holiday season.

Legends, Myths & Lies ~ December 2023 ~Another secret scoop … So, several people have asked …

Hey, hey, my Fantastical Readers—

Another secret scoop … So, several people have asked, “Where’d you come up with the name “Legends, Myths & Lies” for a newsletter? Ultimately, the heading was to give me directions with the newsletter, which steered my story writing of The Therans series. The exploration of the legends in combination with ‘myths’ and ‘lies’ in the title hints at a theme and blurs the lines between truth and fiction.

My primary purpose is to write Legends, Myths, and Lies to draw readers into my world. The subject content suggests mystery, intrigue, and unexpected twists. Memorability is one of my main goals for sharing things and contrasting elements of legends, myths, and lies.

Of course, the title allows me to share exciting subjects.

My favorite people to follow are Josh Gates, William Shatner, and Attenborough. These famous people have traversed the globe searching for answers to the unexplained to give clarity and understanding. I deeply respect people who think outside the norm and analyze complex situations in their quest. My admiration goes beyond these hosts to the dedicated researchers, scientists, and archaeologists whose rigorous research reflects a deep appreciation for the pursuit of history and knowledge.

Researchers: The unsung heroes behind the success of movies like Star Wars, shaping our imaginations and making the impossible a thrilling reality. Much like Star Wars ventured into galaxies far, far away, my narrative takes you to unchartered territories of the mind to a world soaked in archaeological mystery.

History lover: David Attenborough information https://bit.ly/3m5kyeM

Last minute thought: As we dive into the holiday season of gratitude, let’s remember the only thing that should be stuffed is the turkey, not your sense of humor. 😊 Happy holidays!!!

Who doesn’t love a backstage pass to the drama?

Hey, hey, my fantastical Readers—

Hi,

I thought to share a sneak peek behind the curtain secret scoop because who doesn’t love a backstage pass to the drama? Okay, well, it’s not drama, but here’s your VIP access to some of my writing journey details.

The book cover images show my story world’s series title before and after decisions as it developed. Initially, when I crafted the book series, it was titled The Marked for Life Series, but after much focus and thought my agent and I decided to change the name. Jonas came up with the name The Therans Series. Now, I won’t give any spoilers or secrets about what’s between the pages, but I can tell you a treasure trove of secrets awaits discovery. Nope, my mouth is shut. Lol

This is the prequel – my first attempt at a short story for my series, and writing journal entries for my character, Callie, wasn’t the easiest.

Next year, I will release the short story, and you’ll be among the first to know how to access the prequel.

What are you reading? I’m reading A Cry for Mercy: Escape from the Dungeons & Onyx & Ivory by Mindee Arnett. These are books that I look forward to leaving reviews on.

Last minute thought: Okay, so before I leave, I thought I’d share an image with you … I did say I couldn’t guarantee a surprise every time I wrote, but what about this dude? Halloween is over, but this dude is ‘Crusin’ through the afterlife with style. And nope, you won’t find me as his passenger. lol
